how to link to another blog :: Step by Step

How to give some link love:

If you wanted to link to say, my blog this is how you would do it:

Step one: Begin writing a blank post.  Say you want to give me a shout out or just send some love my way.  You would type whatever word or name you want to associate with me for example: Lorijo wrote a blog explaining how to link and link love.

Step two: Then, highlight the part of the sentence or word that you want to become a link. For example: Lorijo wrote this awesome blog explaining how to link and link love.

Step three: and shake it all about…. j/k.  In your blog write post area (the blank white space you type in), look above it and there should be a few formatting options.  One of those options looks like a linked chain and when your word is highlighted and you hover your mouse over it it should say something like “Insert/Edit link (alt + shift + a)” that’s what it says in wordpress.  It may also say hyperlink.  Click on that, and a new window should pop up.  All you need to do is insert the URL website or blogsite address.  Don’t forget to use http:// and check the address to make sure it is a good working link.  Sometimes the fastest way to insert an accurate link is to go to the page you want to link to and copy and the URL from the address line, then go back to where you were and paste the link that you just copied into the address line.  There may be a few other options in the same screen but you can just ignore them, since you highlighted the word you are linking.

Step Four: Click OK or insert. Return to the blog you were editing (remember that white space where you type?) Then,  the word you highlighted should now be underlined.  You now have a link!!

Finally, the terminology is sometimes overwhelming.  If you weren’t sure link love refers to mutual linking. I link to you, you link to me. Now we have some link love!! Make sense? Sometimes it’s similar to a blogroll.  It can only be link love if it’s mutual.  At least I think so. And if you are reading someone’s blog frequently, it is only fair that you add them to your links list or your blogroll!  A key aspect of this is communicating.  If you comment here, I will do my best to respond to you.  Sometimes we like to share things we see on other people’s blogs, in order to pay tribute to the fact that we just stole admired and borrowed their material, you should always include them as a link and as the source.  You may occasionally see this at the bottom of someone’s post: ht:blogger’s name  I asked Anne once what it meant and she replied back that it referred to as a hat tip.  As in, tipping one’s hat to another out of respect.  So there you have it. A step by step guide on how to link to another blog or website and some other information that you probably don’t care about why you should link.

I hope that helps! Please let me know if you have questions about blogging and I will be happy to help!

-lorijo =)  that was just for you Cristine!

ps. count how many times I just linked to myself….hehe

    BTW what is trackback?

  7. 2008 July 5

    Anoir,
A Trackback is: “one of three types of Linkbacks, methods for Web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking, and so referring, to their articles. Some weblog software programs, such as WordPress, Movable Type, Typo and Community Server, support automatic pingbacks where all the links in a published article can be pinged when the article is published. The term is used colloquially for any kind of Linkback.” they refer to linkbacks the same way i refer to it as Link Love. I used google and wikipedia to find this answer =) Thanks for commenting, I am glad I could help!

Can I ask something? When I link to another blog, do you mean I have to write a post for that blog. Every time I link to another blog I have to write a post for it in order for it to link? Sorry, I am still kinda new with this link exchange idea. Thanks

Thanks for the very simple instructions. I’ve blogged today and linked back to your post so others can learn how to link too.

This is really awesome!! Quick question though, how does the other site know you’ve linked to them?

LoriJo – Thanks so much for the easy to follow instructions. Could you clarify a related issue for a novice (aka me!)? If, in a post, I want to refer someone to a source, and I create a link (example, Longwood Gardens in a post I did today)-when they close the Longwood Garden site, do they automatically come back to me or do I lose them? (obviously, I don’t want to lose readers.)I guess I’m surmising that there are benefits to linking, perhaps giving more “substance” and interest to a blog? This is all very new to me…..and my experience level is poor to non-existent, but anxious and ready to learn!

    Thanks again.
